Bird watching safari destinations near the coastal cities of Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and Watamu include Shimba Hills National Reserve and Arabuko Sokoke and the area around Mida creek near Watamu.

Shimba hills National Reserve has 111 different recorded bird species, Arabuko-Sokoke Forest – the largest stretch of coastal dry forest remaining in Eastern Africa has 270 bird species, some completely endemic to the forest, while the Sokoke Scops Owl, Sokoke Pipit, east coast akalat, Amani Sunbird and Spotted Ground Thrush are only found in the park and a few in Tanzania.

Roughly 200kn from Mombasa is the combined mass of Tsavo National Park – (East and West), Tsavo National park as a bid watching safari destination has over 500 bird species recorded including ostriches, bustards, secretary birds, eagles, herons, hornbills, kingfishers, starlings, weavers and many more. During the period from October to January you will also see lots of migratory birds spending the European winter in Tsavo.

• Central Rift Region: Lake Nakuru National Park, Hells Gate and Mt. Longonot National Parks

  Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned as a bird sanctuary with over 400 bird species, including huge flocks of flamingoes and many other water birds.
  Lake Naivasha and the neighbouring Hell’s Gate National Park have a bird list of over 350 species

• Western Region: Kakamega and Mount Elgon

  Kakamega Forest – one of the Important Bird Area (IBA) that has over 330 species of Birds including; Ansorge’s Greenbul, Blue headed bee eater, Turner’s Eremomela and many others forest species.

  Mount Elgon National park has over 300 birds can also be found in the area, including the endangered Lammergeier, African Goshawk, and Baglafecht Weaver, Maathai’s Longleg an endangered dragonfly was discovered here in 2000 and named after Nobel Prize winner Wangari Mathaai
